On the 21st July 2018 a team of 7 of us completed the first Jurassic Coast Ultra Marathon. The course was tough; covering 36 miles of the Jurassic Coast Path from Poole Harbour to Weymouth. The weather added an extra challenge as it was 30ºC by 10am. The fuel stops along the way (of which there were 4) were well manned and stocked and enabled us to stretch off, re-fuel and re-fill our water bladders before the next stage of the race. I drank a whopping 8 litres of water and electrolytes that day! Other than some sore muscles and blisters we managed to keep injury-free. We finished the race in 11 hours, 36 minutes and amazingly my female team-mate and I managed to finish 15th/16th female and 35th/36th over-all. Our mission was to complete the race in one piece and to raise as much money for the Down's Syndrome Association (DSA) as possible. We managed to exceed all of our expectations for both and raised an incredible £3899. Without doubt it was one of the toughest days of my life, but strangely enjoyable and a little bit addictive! If I ever decide to try another Ultra I would include more strength training in my programme, specifically legs. The hills were so steep (and so plentiful) that my hip flexors were the first muscle group to complain. My recovery was great and post-race muscle soreness was kept to a minimum. I think that is where the many months of pre-race training pay off.
I'd love to hear about your Ultra Marathon experiences. Don't forget that you can book in for sports massage pre and post-race; as well as for performance reviews to help your speed and power; and physiotherapy to help with any aches, pains or sprains.
